Notes: Giving a Tennessee slant to the Beatles, Booker T. and friends touch on each song and bring something new to old and familiar. Taking both the record title and the photo location from the address of the Memphis recording studios of Stax Records the band stays close to home while interpreting the sounds and styles of the Lads from Liverpool. T's keyboards and Cropper's guitar work are strong and steady as usual and handle the material easily. A street level feel to the music is built upon the Stax soul bedrock. Fine photography in and out is reason enough to own this one, although Steve Cropper does make the list of 70's fashion victims with his vest and trouser combo. And here's a note received from Clark Wolfe: The woman in the pic with the legs was named Judy Kraft. She worked in public relations at Stax and was know as "Legs Kraft". She was my mom. We found letters from the president of Stax to her after her death. |
