Notes: This
is high upon my list of Davis discs. The in depth liner notes by
Nat Hentoff (Co-editor of The Jazz Review) give rhyme and
reason to the musical selections and mood in the studio as it came
together. Miles had heard a recording of Concierto de Aranjuez
by composer Joaquin Rodrigo while visiting a friend on the West
Coast in 1959. He listened to it for a few weeks and then took
the idea to Gil Evans. After working on the pieces for a few months
the studio work took place and we are rewarded with the results
presented here. My words can't do it justice; get a copy and decide
for yourself where in the Davis canon it fits. The cover art is
simple, yet it is able to sum up the feeling of Spain and the man
with the horn. The cover of this one is pretty dirty, but it earned
it by being played on a regular basis through the years.
