| Artist: Devo Title: Q: Are We Not Men Date: 1978 Label: Warner Bros. Records BSK 3239 Design: Erik Munsön Photography: Barbara Watson
Notes: Produced by Brian Eno, this record started a whole 'nother line of thought that ran through the eighties and still exists in some ways today. We've all heard the syncopated "Satisfaction" and seen the yellow jumpsuits, but there's more to these rather odd fellows than that. They always reminded me of what the Ramones would have turned into if they had been academically talented 'burb dwellers. They embodied the man/machine meld we've seen in later years as the Borg via Star Trek. But they're musical Borg. They took the industrial beats and rhythms and married them to a futuristic, science fiction storyline that we all bought into. The cover became almost an icon for the college crowd I lived with. At first I was appalled at this so called music, me of the progressive/jazz leanings, but repeated listenings drew me in opened my inner ears to a brave new world.
