Notes: This
is the man who produced the wonderful charts for Miles Davis
across three brilliant records (Miles Ahead,
Porgy and Bess and Sketches of Spain) and then went on to
release this collection of songs. Surrounded by a long list of
able musicians Gil crafted some fine jazz across both sides of
this 1961 release. The inner sleeve has a chart which shows the
physical arrangement of the players in the studio as well as the
type of microphone used. His ability to listen to all types of
music and make their styles a part of his tool set worked to enable
him to make music ocross many years and genres. There was even
talk at one point of getting Jimi Hendrix to front a big band for
a session. Gil was inducted into the Downbeat Jazz Hall of Fame
in 1986, and the honor was well deserved. Typical Impulse cover
style this is a nice example of Gil's musical output.
