Notes: What can you say about an album that first presents a version of "Theme from Battlestar Galactica" that makes you wince and then on the flip side does justice to the classic tune "Birdland"? Maynard always does this to me. He can play a mean horn and usually surrounds himself with a good selection of session players, but sometime his selection of material is painful. If we could just keep him away from the trendy "now" sounding tunes and let him stick to blowing his horn we'd be on the right track. That aside the cover art here is what caught my interest in this record. There's an almost R. Crumb type feel to the figure and a Peter Max look to the coloring. Very attrective it is. Scan the cover, burn the few good tunes onto a CD and then shelve this one. Line Up: Maynard Ferguson and a cast of many.... |
