Artist:  Quicksilver Messenger Service

Title:  Shady Grove

Date:  1969

Label:  Capitol Records   SM-391

Cover Painting:    L.K. Hollister

Notes:  After releasing some of their longer pieces on previous records the band sticks to some shorter works here. This is the 3rd release and it features Nick Hopkins on various keyboards and strings. And like everything he's played on it's a brilliant outing. The band seems to draw from his sound and it enhances their own brand of psychedelic country blues folk whatzit. Gary Duncan, who was involved in the previous two records, didn't make these sessions and word on the street is that he was visiting one of San Francisco's finest law enforcement facilities at the time. The cover painting seems suited to a gatefold cover, but my copy doesn't open. Very nice relaxing shady grove it is.

Line Up:

David Freiberg: bass, guitar, viola, vocals
John Cipollina: guitar, vocals
Nicky Hopkins: organ, piano, celeste, cello, harpsichord, keyboards
Gary Duncan: bass, guitar, vocals
Greg Elmore: percussion, drums
