Artist:  Dick Schory's New Percussion Ensemble

Title:  Wild Percussion and Horn's A'Plenty

Date:  1960

Label RCA Records   LSP-2289

Notes:  It was 1960 and stereo was still relatively fresh and exciting. Dick took his group into the Chicago Orchestra Hall and proceeded to record a live and wide open session. The sound was allowed to wallow around in the acoustics of the hall prior to its trip into the tapes machines for capture. To quote from the liner notes, "No other percussion album quite like this one has ever been recorded before. We absolutely will not be responsible for any overstimulation of your playback equipment --- or for the friends and freeloaders who are encouraged to hang around for another playing". Hyperbole aside, this is a fine recording. The music swings and sways and at times even struts its stuff in clever ways. And you get yet another cover of the surf anthem, "Misirlou". The cover design appeals to the hipster inside and the photo of the session shows the musical layout of the ensemble. To go back to the liner notes, "…this is music you can dance, read, drink, relax or eat to". That pretty much covers it don't you think?
