| Artist: Patti Smith Group Title: Wave Date: 1979 Label: Arista Records AB 4221 Photographs by: Robert Mapplethorpe Art Direction: Robert Mapplethorpe Design: Maude Gilman and r.e.f.m Produced by: Todd Rundgren
Notes: From the excellent choice of cover tunes (R n R Star) to the heartfelt vocals of Frederick (dedicated to "my clarinet teacher Fred Sonic Smith") this is a keeper. Some of this material went on to become prominent in the band's live shows and were to influence many aspiring writers and poets. Not as revolutionary as some of the other records Patti has put out, the more controlled vocals and general tone of the band leaves it feeling a tad subdued. In a good way of course. The Mapplethorpe photos capture the mysterious nature of Ms. Smith. The dark eyes and hair contrasting with the white doves and simple dress. A gypsy woman casting a hard stare, an inquisitive child, a cautious young girl. They're all there, in words, in pictures, in sound. Music from New York with a vein of Detroit running through it. Poet, singer, musician. Rock Star. It seemed like such important music, some of it still does.
