Artist:  The Smothers Brothers

Title:  The Songs and Comedy of the…at the Purple Onion

Date:  1961

Label:  Mercury Records  MG 20611

Notes:  The Smother's Brothers are well known for their comedy, as they should be, but their talent with their respective instruments should not be dismissed or cast aside. These guys can tear it up. The cover of "Jezebel" is one of the best that I've heard. The crowd at the Purple Onion (San Francisco) was treated to a great collection of running commentary, gags amd straight harmony filled songs on this night. The cover picture of two fresh faced youths belies the churning thoughts that run through Tom's mind. And Dick does his best to steer the boy straight. I had to include the inner paper sleeve just for it's wonderful pictures of ancient record players. It seems like a different world now doesn't it? But the Brothers, Smothers still sound fresh today. If you can find it, give it a listen or two.
