Artist:  Art Tatum

Title:  Piano Starts Here

Date:  195?

Label Columbia Records - CS 9655

Art Direction:  Allen Weinberg

Cover Design: Andrew Parker

Notes:  An incredible piece of musical history. The record contains the first piano solos cut by Art in 1933 and a solo concert perfromance form 1949. The man could sound like a pair of pianos all by himself and went on to inspire a league of future piano greats. One being the late, great Oscar Peterson who would continue to strive for the left handed brilliance of Tatum. Art had the ability and style known and recognized by artists and critics alike, but lived at a point in time where jazz had few outlets and an unknowing public. The has been re-released on CD and anyone with an interest in jazz piano should have at least one copy around the house. The cover painting gives us a slight abstraction of the man and his instrument. Like his music, you need to step back to take it all in and bring it into focus.
