Artist: Peter Tosh Title: Legalize It Date: 1976 Label: Columbia Records PC 34253 Photography: Lee Jaffe Design: Andy Engel
Notes: The first taste of reggae that a lot of America got came by way of this record. Along with Bob Marley's "Jamming", the title cut from this record echoed throughout college radio for years to come. An anthem of sorts, Tosh makes no bones about what side of the fence he is on. With his split from the Wailers and his subsequent premature death a lot of people dismissed much of his contribution to the roots of what became reggae and world music, but one listen to this record should erase all doubt. Powerful lyrics sung over a tight rhythm section with a soulful conviction makes it all come together. Tosh was of a strong will and would not be led where he did not want to go. This comes out in his music as well as he own personal life. The cover photo speaks for itself. Jah Rastafari! Sleep well brother Peter...
