The Southern Backtones - Los Tormentos De Amor (1999 Pinche Flojo Records)

I just recently got around to listening to this fine set of sounds and what a pleasant surprise it was. A nice combination of swing, rockabilly and surf sensibility played straight up and rocling. You can hear the usual influences for this genre, but the Backtones rise above the usual posing and attitude to bring a real joy to the music. There is a genuine respect in the manner and attack with which the material is handled and they're not afraid to bring their own punch to the party. What sounds like a pretty Gretsch ith a Bigsby whammy is used to fill in the musical landscape on some of the instrumental cuts and the effect can be like sunset on another planet. The tune "Call Off Your Dogs" is a great barroom rocker that'll have you tappin' your toes and sippin' the sauce. Hailing from Houston, Texas the band is made up of:

Kevin Patterson - vocals and drums
Hank Schyma - vocals and guitar
Shawn Supra - rhythm guitar
David Taylor - drums
John Wolf - vocals
Dan Workman - vocals

Nice work fellers!

2/4/2010 The Red Button - She's About to Cross My Mind (2007 Grimble/IODA )

The biggest surprise with this release is that the band hails from present day Los Angeles. Combining the sounds from both sides of the ocean there's a 60's power-pop feel throughout the disc. Jangly guitars, sweet harmonies and pleasing melodies tie the songs together and close atttention to the production values results in a mix with a clean bass far anough up front in the mix to get your toes tapping along while the 12-srtring Rickenbacker floats above the melody and the keyboards fit just so. It could be the 60's in the U.K. or maybe the Los Angeles of the Byrds and Burrito's or the San Francisco haunts of the Beau Brummels or even a touch the 80's through the ears of The Smithereens or The Bangles.

The band is a collaboration between Seth Swirsky (songwriter to the stars) and Mike Ruekberg (Rex Daisy). Nostalgia without the irony, pleasure without the guilt.
